PPGCosmo

PPGCosmo is an international PhD program on Astrophysics, Cosmology and Gravitation that aims to give PhD students the opportunity to develop a successful international scientific career. The research topics range from theoretical to observational aspects of Astrophysics, Cosmology and Gravitation, including participation in collaborations such as Einstein Telescope, LIGO, Virgo, J-PAS, J-PLUS, S-PLUS, Subaru PFS, DELVE, Euclid, LSST, Pierre Auger Observatory, SWGO and CTA. PPGCosmo is a collaborative program bringing together leading institutions and researchers from multiple countries around the world.

Positions and scholarships

Positions, when available, are detailed at APPLICATIONS. Scholarships are possible from different funding agencies. The selection is based on an online interview together with the candidate's CV and reference letters.

Activities

PPGCosmo promotes several activities, not only for its students.

Together with the Center for Astrophysics and Cosmology of UFES (Cosmo-ufes), seminars, mini-courses, international meetings and outreach activities are periodically and intensely organized.  For details, visit the Cosmo-ufes website.

Coursework

Below is the list of courses offered by PPGCosmo. To qualify for thesis defense, a student must accumulate 36 credits, and pass all the Basic and Specific courses listed below. Courses of similar content completed elsewhere could be considered equivalent (refer to this syllabus for more information and ask for equivalence using this form). Additionally, at least one Elective course must be completed prior to the thesis defense. An unofficial English version of the PPGCosmo internal regulations can be found here, while the official Portuguese version is available here.

During the initial phase of their study, students will primarily be based in Vitória-ES. By the end of the second year, students are expected to pass a qualifying exam. Students are anticipated to have the chance to visit other collaborating Brazilian institutions, and more notably, the opportunity to spend up to one year at the co-advisor's overseas institution.

New members should read the cosmo-ufes welcome page.

Vitória, ES, Brazil

Vitória is the capital of the Espírito Santo state. It is a human-sized city on the southeast coast of Brazil, well-connected and pleasant.

PhD students usually live within walking distance of both the UFES campus and the beach. The airport is also very close to the campus, just a ten-minute drive away.
